Are you interested in learning more about the IT and consultancy company Mediaan? Join us on June 1st for the Mediaan case day for a day of learning and working on a real-world case. The event will be from 11:00 to around 14:00.

Mediaan has been operating since 1969 and is headquartered in Heerlen, The Netherlands. They have offices in Düsseldorf, Munich, Hasselt, and Brussels. Mediaan serves their international customers by combining digital, business, and organizational expertise to help them transform their businesses and become more data-driven.

You will have the opportunity to work on a case that will give you a taste of what it is like to work at Mediaan. The case will be based on a real-world challenge that one of their clients is facing. You will work in teams to develop a solution to the challenge, and you will have the opportunity to get feedback from Mediaan's experienced consultants. During the case day you will also have the opportunity to network with Mediaan's consultants during a provided lunch.

Get to know Flow Traders by visiting their office during this in-house day.

On Thursday 16th of March, Dutch speakers among Vectum have the opportunity to meet CBS (Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek) through an exciting case. The case will take place in the afternoon (13:00-16:00) at Tapijn (room F1.006). Consistent schatten van Volkstellingstabellen

edere tien jaar wordt overal in de hele wereld een volkstelling gehouden. In Nederland verzorgt het CBS dit. Nederland is één van de weinige landen met een virtuele telling. Hiervoor gebruiken we beschikbare bronnen; deze bronnen zijn niet altijd compleet, ze dekken niet alle Nederlanders. Ontbrekende gegevens worden bij geschat. Een grote uitdaging is om consistent te schatten. Dit is niet vanzelfsprekend als tabellen uit verschillende bronnen komen. Gelukkig bestaan er wiskundige technieken om consistent te schatten.

On Friday, May 20, Datacation will visit Maastricht at Tapijnkazerne 11! Join us for this opportunity to meet a data science startup, founded and run by Vectum & Incognito alumni. 💡

Datacation consists of a driven team of 11 data professionals, operating from the AI innovation center in Eindhoven. They are the whiz kids, the IT nerds, with a social character. Their business offers AI, ML, and data engineering solutions. The clients of Datacation are, among others, ING Bank, UMC Utrecht, van der Valk, Hogeschool Arnhem Nijmegen, and a lot of medium enterprises as well. 🤝🏼

The Hackathon starts at 13:30. After a quick introduction, you get to use your favorite programming language to solve a case for a Dutch Eredivisie football team! You and your team will then present your ideas 💪🏼. To conclude, celebrate the start of the weekend in Datacation style, with some pizza & drinks. 🍻

Get the consultancy experience in actuarial sciences!

In the afternoon of May 12, we are visiting the office of Oliver Wyman | Actuarial in Amsterdam Zuid, together with Asset | Econometrics. There we will get a tour, presentation, and work on a case as well. The case will be about insuring a new product on the market. This is a challenge since we have to keep sustainability factors in mind and the always-changing customer spending. 🤯 We will end the day with a networking dinner.

Coming Tuesday we will be hosting a Guest Lecture by Ruud Kleynen, Founder and CEO of Kleynen Consultants and Hi there. Hi there has strategic partnerships with McKinsey and IBM and is one of the nine companies in Microsoft's ScaleUp program. Additionally, Ruud has been a part-time professor at our faculty for 12 years from 2000 to 2012. And here’s what he’ll talk about next Tuesday:

“In my presentation, I will bridge the gap between what you learn here at the university and what its application can look like in practice. I will discuss non-life, life, and pensions, but also related areas such as banking and health. In the latter case, for example, machine learning and big data is a wonderful challenge.

Central to my story will be software engineering and the use of the Cloud. Due to the Cloud, the actuary's field of activity is changing enormously. While much attention has been paid to making calculations and providing financial reporting, the arrival of the Cloud has opened up a whole new area. Due to the computing capacity that Cloud offers, you as a student can build systems that insurers, pension funds, and banks are jealous of.

I'm going to take you through the world of RFPs, private equity, the big software houses, McKinsey, and the relationship between them with our company. That link lies with the IT system we developed, which almost completely automates insurers and pension funds. We named this system HiThere and it was built by a core group of seven actuaries/econometricians, all from UM.

With that system, we have been ranked among the best 50 InsurTechs in the world! But that system also means that standard actuarial work is almost completely automated. There is therefore no future in making actuarial calculations anymore.”

Possibilities after your study

If you want to become a fully equipped actuary, you could consider following the postgraduate course provided by the Actuarial Institute. This training gives the protected title AAG and makes it possible to join the Actuarial Association.

As for your career opportunities, they are huge. Besides pension funds, insurers, asset managers, banks and consultancy companies, the whole world is open to you. The financial industry is holesly looking for people with beta backgrounds. Big data, machine learning, Merges & Acquisitions are some examples of such areas that lie outside the standard area.

The National Econometricians Day (in Dutch: Landelijke Econometristendag, abbreviated as LED) is the largest annual recruitment event for students in the fields of econometrics, operations research, data science and actuarial sciences in The Netherlands. The LED is aimed at all students in these fields in The Netherlands in their 3rd year or higher. On this day, over 600 students get the opportunity to orientate themselves on their future careers and get in contact with their potential future employers. To make sure that the LED is also open for international students, a lot of companies offer their cases in English. In order to keep the LED available for all econometrics students, we don’t use CV selection.

For the very first time in history, the LED 2021 will take place completely online! In preparation for the LED event, sign-ups open on the 25th of November, Marcel Noordman will guide us through the process of setting up a successful LinkedIn profile. He will show by using a few tips and tricks, that he had learnt throughout his career, how to make your profile as appealing as possible. The workshop will last an hour, after which the Zoom call will remain open to compare and improve each other’s profiles.
