This period’s Research Lecture is given by Arman Rouhani, a PhD Candidate at the KE Dept at SBE. The title and abstract of the lecture are as follows:

An improved bound for the price of anarchy for related machine scheduling

In this talk, we introduce an improved upper bound for the efficiency of Nash equilibria in utilitarian scheduling games on related machines. The machines have varying speeds and adhere to the Shortest Processing Time (SPT) policy as the global order for job processing. The goal of each job is to minimize its completion time, while the social objective is to minimize the sum of completion times

The lecture will take place in the room TS53 A0.23 at 19:00h

Each period Vectum organises a research lecture in collaboration with the KE department (Quantitative Economics department), and this period’s lecture will be given by none other than Mark Schröder, one of E&OR’s most beloved professors. It will take place on Tuesday, October 10th at 19h at SBE, room TS53 C-1.05. 

During this lecture, Mark will present to us his research on the topic: Hotelling with externalities

Abstract: “We study a variant of Hotelling's location game. In this game, firms have to decide on a location on an interval. Hotelling's famous result says that firms have an incentive to locate close to each other if firms try to maximize their market share. We assume a different behavior of the consumers, which care about their travel distance as well as the number of other consumers visiting each firm. We see how this change in assumption affects the locations of the firms.”

After this lecture, you are also invited to come to our Committee Information Session at 20h15 during which we will shortly present the different committees. If you want to help strengthen Vectum, then make sure to join! (Note that you don’t have to join both the lecture and the presentation)

The Scavenger Hunt is a staple of Vectum activities and for a good reason! It's a long-lasting tradition for econometricians to rave the streets of Maastricht, and terrorize the city for an evening. Whether you’ll be stuffing your face with marshmallows or chasing strangers for a picture, next Tuesday is not the time to be shy. 

We will meet at Vrijthof, at 18:30 where your teams will be announced and you’ll be given the list of challenges.

You'll be teamed with some of your fellow students to battle through the challenges, and as always, the winners are up for a surprise prize. So, get your competitive spirit going, and let yourself be a little crazy! The evening will continue with drinks and music at the Preuv :)

Is the academic year already stressing you out in week 2, and do you need to blow off some steam? Join us next Tuesday evening for some Cocktails & Games 🍹.

You will visit three different stations across the city (don't worry, they won't be too far from each other; we will use some optimization techniques we learned in year 2 😉). The fifth period is coming to an end, and so are our Tuesday night activities 💔

Our last activity of the academic year will be a city game! We will be split into different teams and visit various stations throughout the city, where exciting challenges will await. The team that successfully completes all the challenges first will be rewarded with a prize 🏆

We’ll meet in front of the Preuverij, Kakeberg 6, 6211 KN Maastricht, at 18:45 and leave for the different stations from there.

Due to the limited capacity, our blacklist policy applies.

This coming Tuesday we'll be spending a typical spring evening to Sint-Pietersberg for a game of ultimate frisbee 🥏 and some drinks watching the sunset 🌇.

We'll meet at SBE at 18:45 and walk to Sint-Pietersberg together. Once the sun set, we'll end the evening at the Preuverij.

Next Tuesday, the Actuarieel Genootschap will take care of our weekly social event. On the 16th of May, Vectum will dive into the field of Actuarial Sciences while enjoying an all time classic: the pub quiz! Sharpen your pencils and your wits as you tackle challenging questions under the enjoyment of a few drinks.

Make sure to join us at Basilica to network with actuarial professionals whilst enjoying some drinks! After the quiz, we'll head to the Preuverij for more drinks and socializing.

The event will take place on Tuesday, March 21st at 19:15 at the local bowling alley (Olround Maastricht, Boschstraat 30, 6211 AX Maastricht). We will have lanes reserved just for us, so be sure to come on time.

What is Pipple?
Pipple is a data science consultancy company located in Eindhoven. Pipple was founded 7 years ago and currently consists of about 30 employees. Most of our data science consultants have a strong background in econometrics, data science, computer science or statistics. As a data science consultant, we work for various customers in different branches: finance, retail, logistics and healthcare.

Who is coming?
On Tuesday, Sanne, Joyce, Rick and Roos from Pipple will be joining the bowling activity! 

• Sanne did her bachelor and masters in Econometrics in Maastricht, were she was an active member of student association Tragos. She wrote her thesis on the usage of Convolutional Neural Network in Automated Damage Assessment for 510 - an initiative of the Netherlands Red Cross. She is working for almost 2 years as a data scientist right now.

• Joyce started working at Pipple 1.5 years ago as an intern. She wrote her thesis for a home care provider, where she used reinforcement learning (RL) to optimize the routes of the employees. After completing the internship, she continued working for Pipple as a junior data scientist on various projects, specializing in RL.

• Rick did his bachelor Econometrics in Maastricht, and is currently studying at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Rick started as a graduate intern at Pipple in March. He is writing his thesis on the subject of predicting geometric transformations of 3D objects.

• Just like Sanne, Roos also studied Econometrics in Maastricht and was an active member of rowing association Saurus. She graduated at Pipple on a vehicle routing topic and in 2018, she started working as a data scientist at Pipple. Since last year, she is the team lead of the junior consultants. Besides that, she is a Women in Data Science ambassador. Make sure to check out the upcoming event on 27th of March on www.wids.nl
